about

Somewhere along the way we didn't get the memo about being too old to do this kind of music. As a result, instead of going on cruises in Florida, we produce biting music that is laden with antipathy for the ordinary and delivers social commentary seasoned with a dash of anarchy that takes a hard swipe at modern life. We reject most main stream ideology equally and champion the creative thinker and the under-dog yapping in the wind.

Many musicians struggle with being boxed in a genre and we are much the same. Labels really are social constructs that mean little. We are driven by the original classic Punk attitude but that doesn't mean our music has to fit that descriptor. If you are familiar with The Damned's 'Strawberries' album you'll know what we mean. We write in any style - the only rule is we have to like it. We've drawn on 40 years of influence - ours is not an original sound, its just a big mash-up of so many moments and that's how we like it. Much of the time the result has a retro New-Wave/ Post-Punk vibe but you can be the judge of that. It is whatever it wants to be, whatever you make or it.

We value classic song-writing - if it can't be played on an acoustic guitar around a campfire the odds are it won't make it to release. Add harmonies (lovely, rich harmonies), a Vox keyboard, sometimes a sad violin and the bite of a Rickenbacker bass and we are 'happy as'. Universal feeback so far is that this album is a 'grower'; a few spins in and people get it as a whole body of work and one worthy of owning. The songs are unique to each other but connected by a common thread. The lyrics are penned to be cross-generational and rarely stray far from ideas of personal freedom, seeking out your own sanctuary and celebrating the individual.

A debut album yes, the first album for either of us yes, but it's been decades in the making. Along the way there have been many bands, many projects, many songs and many gigs for we members of OLDER. Jel & Julie first met in another band in the early 90's in New Zealand and one song on 'Silence', 'Not Like Me', is from that era. Many years passed, most of them spent on opposite sides of the world with Jel back in his native Britain, before we reformed under the OLDER name & began writing again in 2015. Age had not dulled our passion for high-energy music, if anything it had fed a deep urge to celebrate it. The name OLDER was chosen as a simple acknowledgement of our chronological reality; there was no pretence to feign youth.

The O symbol of OLDER was designed to be a nod and wink to the Celtic sign of the Awenydd - literally meaning 'inspiration' in Welsh (Jel's ancestory). It's a complex concept but for us in a nutshell: 'Those who make a place in their hearts, in their thoughts and in the way they live open themselves to inspiration.' It may appear grandiouse however, for us it represents the source of our creativity and in turn much of our freedom and happiness in life and being musicians.

We get our kicks from observational writing - questioning everything and assuming nothing. It's the foundation for our anarchic mindsets, but we are nice people, really. We are true ambiverts; we live away from people in rural New Zealand, happing in our own space, but when we 'come out to play' we love to hang with interesting, creative types and engage deeply. We are the oddballs that never quite grew up, never quite fitted in and didn't like being one of the crowd. Our 'inner child' is alive and well - often laughing at the wrong time and seeing life for how pompous it can be at times. If you are like us then we hope you enjoy our music. It's for people like you. Sometimes it thrashes, sometimes it chills. ALWAYS it is honest, never constrained by what we are told is should be, so you never know what's coming next. Love OLDER xxx

Track Name: Côte d'Azur
Feeling the pinch, got a new Maseratti
School fees, gym subs, dinner party
Whitening appointment, personal styling
Herbal ointment, keep smiling

Tightening the belt, got a lunch at Hestons
Nanny had to go, don't mention
Stocks are stalling, banks keep calling
Put it on the card, so boring

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Times are tough, need a tuck and a face lift
Missed a golf trip, hard shit
Marble top fail, cancelled the kitchen
Life's getting grimy, it's bitchin'

Keepin up Jones, Safron & Hugos
Pawning the silver, God knows
Eating al fresco, take out from Tesco
Savin' the coupons, let's go

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur

Squeeze is stifflin', future's frighten'
Time to face it, can't ignore it
We're drowning with the poor

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon
Time to play, escape it all in the Cote d'azur

Reality cuts a jagged edge
We lick our wounds and put it on red

Let's get away - summer sun, Dom Perignon, stiff upper lip it's been too long
Time to play - ride the debt and buy some more, have some fun in the Cote d'azur
Track Name: Perfect
Roll up, roll up, it's the social fair
Count up the trophies, quif that hair
Leave out the spooks and the spivs don't care
Lay out your stall for the players there

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)

Daddy's so proud and mummy's got her hair done
Standing to attention for some weekend fun
Nameless, shameless, living in a fantasy
Naughty little lives in a model little family

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)

Look at your reflection, who do you think you see?
One plus one is sometimes free
Find a little courage to swing from the rafters
Leave all the crowd for happy ever-afters

Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl
Oh he's such a perfect boy
Oh she's such a perfect girl (whatever)
Track Name: Banshee
You're givin' it that
Oyster Rockafellas and a wee Gewürzt
From where we're sat
Rome is slowly burning
We're the ones who's getting hurt

Banshee in a quarter acre yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard

You're moving your lips
Silver spoon and your tea leaf views
See the sinking ships?
Country overboard, so did you read it in the news?

Banshee in a quarter acre yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard

Heartless, fearless Humpties on a wall
Ten to one we bet you're gonna fall

Banshee in a quarter acre yard
Screaming for a changing of the guard
Going, going, going, gone
Track Name: Textiles
Comes alive, doesn't say a lot
Head high, towel in hand
Doesn't dress for tea, no need to pack a lot
Not defined by tighty whitey lines
Ohhh

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!

Mind is free, a book without a cover
Lost his label, many tans ago
Spitting chicken, sensei in the kitchen
Dojo rules, everybody knows
Ohhhhh

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!

Keep blinkered views, in suburban mews
Textiled sermons, yesterday's news
He's heard it all before, really doesn't care
Open your eyes, imagine you're there!

Likes the lifestyle, without textile
Don't matter if the grass is overgrown
Ain't no dark horse, runs his own course
Likes to flutter in the breeze
More D's!
Track Name: Crown
Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are

Rising, from the depths of dark seas
Reaching for the surface
Ascending up to breathe
Watch us, break free, fly and soar high
Bright stars on the skyline
This is, this is our time to

Stay
True to yourself

Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are

We know the odds are stacked
The haters hate but we'll fight back
Our faith is strength to see us through
These battle lines we've drawn with you

We hold these reigns, this change, this wave, this movement, conquer kingdoms
Stand for future generations
Fight for choice, fight for freedom

Stay
True to yourself

Go, go, go, smash it all down
Challenge all the rules
Don't suffer fools who claim a crown
You, you, you, dreaming of it
Know your bones and dance your own way
Keep your faith and never sway
From who you are.
Track Name: Silence
What will you say,
As ashes blow away
And you file outside into the autumn air
He lived a simple life?
A garden and a wife?
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me

Such simple words
Seems so absurd
Yet the price of love is more than you can bear
Your heart is caged in steel
You can't afford to feel
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me

In your life you cast your shadow over me
Why won't you see?
Moments wasted on the hope of so much more
You see through me

In my life I've lived in shadows cast by yours
Fell in-between the cracks, ignored
I sing my song for you and open up my heart
You see through me

What will you write
With your hindsight
Did you take the time to learn enough to share?
What will you send
A stand in for a friend
And as the silence screams

You just stare
You see through me
Track Name: Not Like Me
Not like me, Not like me

Nothing stands the test of time
In the end what's yours is mine
Only those who run like me
Know the visions that I see

Few of us are made to find
Higher plains of any kind
Think beyond the garden wall and
See the stars begin to fall

Not like me, Not like me

Nothing built will last forever
Drift apart or come together
Nothing comes to those who wait
Tomorrow's chances are too late

Every day brings strength of mind
The years are leaving you behind
I won't rest until I'm whole
Body, mind, aching soul

Not like me, Not like me

Never sought for second best
Never found the time to rest
Never closed my eyes to change
Always looked to rearrange

Nothing matters more these days
I have tried the other ways
Drifters cloud the way you see
Maybe you are not like me

Not like me, Not like me, Not like me, Not like me
Track Name: Got The Girl
Their eyes first locked in a small cafe
Latte lips, Eggs Benedict, over Hemingway
By the time she caught the waiter's eye
He was in love

She had her mind on a dinner date at seven
He got it sown up, he'd died and gone to heaven
Status update: punching above his weight

Oo Ah, top of the world
Oo Ah, he got the girl
Oo Ah, she don't feel the same
Oo Ah, what a crying shame

Friday night on the pull with the lads
Practiced pout, Wonderbra, she's a drunken dream
By the time they left the dance floor
He was in love

He flagged a taxi to take them to the West End
She got her sights set firmly on his best friend
Status update: snagged himself a bombshell

Oo Ah, top of the world
Oo Ah, he got the girl
Oo Ah, she don't feel the same
Oo Ah, what a crying shame

Only drives at two speeds, doesn't mind the nose bleeds
Looking for his mother in the eyes of every lover
Heart is in the right place, head is lost in outer space
Slow down sunshine you've got more time

Oo Ah, top of the world
Oo Ah, he got the girl
Oo Ah, she don't feel the same
Oo Ah, what a crying shame
Track Name: 1984
I'm the millions sharing silence on the bus
No human contact, no need for fuss

Send a request to be my friend, I know we've never met
The real world scares me, I'm not ready for it yet

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Show that you care

I'm the blank face that you never look at twice
An ice cold aura, a silence vice

Send a request to be my friend, I know we've never met
The real world scares me, I'm not ready for it yet

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Show that you care

Yeah I know I could switch off my phone
But I bore myself when I'm alone

Facebook friends I'm up tonight,
I'm on show, gimme a like
My esteem grows on a share, gimme a love
Gimme a love, gimme a love, gimme a love, gimme a love

I'm the millions sharing silence on the bus
No human contact, no need for fuss
Track Name: Ten Percent
When you hit the sack at night
Does your conscience bother you?
Does your overdraft of love
Drain the joy from what you do

Many years of tears, deceptions
Line the course you're set to take
All your wealth and shallow charms
Will be the last thing you forsake

We're open Sundays, come at 10 and take a pew

We got the hypocrites, we got the lowlifes
Dodgy dealers,cheating house wives
Ten percent deal, did we mention
We can fast track your redemption

When your past affects your future
Do you file appeals to suit?
Is your history a rewrite
Of the truth that's haunting you

Many moments mark the man
Some cuts can slice down to a soul
You can say it never happened
Just pretend you're in control

We're open Sundays, come at 10 and take a pew

We got the hypocrites, we got the lowlifes
Dodgy dealers, cheating house wives
Ten percent deal, did we mention
We can fast track your redemption

Oh yeah, sure we're screwed up like you
You'll fit in fine as you do as we do

We got the hypocrites, we got the lowlifes
Dodgy dealers, cheating house wives
Ten percent deal, did we mention
We can fast track your redemption

We got the pond scum, we got the freak shows
Judges sidekicks, sexual no-gos
Its a win-win we're a great fit
We're the shovel you're the shit
Track Name: Ambivert
Put her in a box with a bow on top
Sunny disposition, doesn't say a lot
Keeps her head down, doesn't make a fuss
Works very hard, not one of us
But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Tittle tattle chat over morning tea
Gets a little bored with the company
Stifles a yawn, gets a blank stare
She'd give her right arm not to be there
But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Oh their mundane world is shaken to the core
She's riding in the cart, apples on the floor

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin

Come Monday morning just gone 9,
ASBO smile, quite benign
Best not try to empathise
Keep it stuum, divert your eyes
Leave the crazy well alone
Count the hours 'til she goes home
But maybe she's watching you
Watching her, watching you

But where her mind goes
Nobody asks, nobody knows
She's such a strange one

She's antisocial, she don't fit in
A twisted enigma with a Cheshire grin
Track Name: Takapuna Wives Club
Bella's got a new man, Prada and a fake tan
Blonde locks, botox, boob lift, detox
She almost has it all

Networks, cocaine, shopping with his millions
PT, liquid lunch, cleansing, Brazilians
She seems so happy, darling

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Club rules, tight lips, know your place, watch your hips
There's a script, no social slips
Only as good as your game

Don't ask, don't nag, spend it up, don't sag
Gotta keep on top to be a WAG
There's plenty waiting in line

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

People start talking, you'll find yourself walking
Social outcast, nothing to say
Minihaha it ain't that funny
When the tide comes in and washes you away

Credit card comes at a cost
Valium numbs the freedom lost
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Remember you were free, money was your own
Friends you had were real, not a Stepford clone
Come now dry your eyes, reclaim your sense of self
Happiness is more than measured by your wealth

Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club
Trouble in the Takapuna Wives Club

Don't know what it takes to make her happy
Too damn sad to leave her sugar daddy
Rich girl, poor choice, lost her own voice
Sold her soul to the Takapuna Wives Club
Track Name: Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah
Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but it's just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

With all due respect, the fact of the matter is
Going forward, break down silos and touch bases
Let's get disruptive, push the envelope yeah
It's in the pipeline, let's take this offline.

Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but its just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

Run it up the flagpole, think outside the box
Raise the bar and get our ducks in a row
Synergise, my door is open
Blue-sky thinking, are you with me?

Blah blah, blah blah, I love the sound of my voice
Talk for hours but its just a lot of noise
Think I make myself perfectly clear
Lights are on but there's no one here.

I think I'm great, I've nailed it look at me
I've memorised the slides from one to ten and back again
I can draw and point and talk at the same time
With me on board, turn your water into wine!
Track Name: Sanctuary
Too many voices shouting from the left and right
They breed oppression block the truth snub out the light
My axe is blunt from waging war at every turn
You build your pyres stack 'em high I'll watch 'em burn

Take a moment, breathe the air in
Feel your lungs charged with freedom
Take a sight line, mark the target
Squeeze the trigger and let it, let it

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary

Your city's choking on its self-indulgent bile
Cesspit of fascists marching paradigms of style
Indignant outrage over things you can't control
Your freedom licenced you're just living on parole

Take a moment, breathe the air in
Feel your lungs charged with freedom
Take a sight line, mark the target
Squeeze the trigger and let it, let it

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary

In this place we leave their prejudice behind
Free your body, free your soul and own your mind

Let it rise, let it soar
Your spirit won't be crushed any more
Over land, over sea
Come to us, come to find your sanctuary.
Track Name: Vanilla
Give me chocolate, raspberry sorbet - hey
Give me sprinkles, crunchy praline - hmm
But where I draw the line though
Where people queue and flock go
I just don't do vanilla

Waffle cone, the shape don't matter - no
On a stick or laid on a platter - hmm
Dress it up any way you choose
I got the bruise to prove it
I just don't do vanilla

Lips go numb, brain freeze
Sticky fingers, wobbly knees
Change the menu please

I just don't do vanilla
